What We Do

Our Work

The VATSIM Pilot Training Department (PTD) is a central department of the VATSIM Network. Our mission is to educate in order to improve the overall levels of skill, knowledge and competency of VATSIM pilot members.

To achieve this, the PTD has four core functions:

  • We regulate, approve and oversee the delivery of Pilot Ratings across the network, working with a network of Authorised Training Organisations (ATOs) across the globe
  • We create and provide training and resources for VATSIM and flight simulator pilots
  • We support VATSIM Regions and Divisions in their pilot training and development initiatives
  • We operate VATSIM’s Pilot Feedback System, using the data provided to work with individuals and to guide and monitor the impact of localised and network-wide training initiatives

Use the menu links to the left to learn more about our functions, the volunteers who are responsible for the different areas and how to get in touch with us.

What is VATSIM?

VATSIM stands for Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network. Founded in 2001, VATSIM is completely free and allows members to act as pilots, by using desktop flight simulator software such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane or Prepar3D, and/or as air traffic controllers by using free, highly-realistic ATC radar client software developed especially for the network. The VATSIM client software and network infrastructure ensures that all pilots and controllers see each other in one shared, global world, regardless of where they are physically located or the type of flight simulator software they are using.

The result is a highly-realistic simulation of the global airspace and air traffic control system, with realistic radio communications, procedures and operations. For more information about VATSIM, head to the VATSIM website.
