Examiners

How to gain your VATSIM Flight Examiner Rating (P6)

The VATSIM Flight Examiner (P6) rating is for those authorised to conduct practical flying examinations (‘skill tests’) on behalf of the VATSIM Pilot Training Department.

If you are interested in becoming an examiner, you will need:

  • A current VATSIM Flight Instructor (P5) rating
  • A minimum of 500 hours of time logged as a pilot on the VATSIM network
  • A minimum of 50 hours instructing toward VATSIM pilot ratings

Applicants for a Flight Examiner rating should submit a completed form PTD 3006 to the Certification Standards department at certification.standards@vatsim.net, enclosing evidence that the required number of flight instruction hours have been met. Your application will be assessed and if successful, you will receive an acceptance email and be enrolled on to the VATSIM Flight Examiner core course in Moodle.

This is a self-study online course. On completion, you will receive a course completion certificate which should be forwarded to the PTD Certification Standards department. The Certification Standards team will then arrange for an Examiner Assessment of Competence (EAoC). This will normally consist of a Senior Examiner observing you conducting a practical examination.

On successful completion of the EAoC, your rating will be upgraded.

Revalidation

Examiner ratings are valid for 36 months from date of issue. Revalidation is achieved by:

  • Conducting a minimum of 3 Skill Tests in the 36 month period, OR:
  • Being observed conducting a Skill Test by a PTD Senior Examiner in the 12 months immediately preceding the date of expiry, or completing within the 12 months immediately preceding the date of expiry an Examiner Assessment of Competence with a PTD Senior Examiner

In addition to either of the above requirements, examiners must also attend at least one standardisation seminar, or complete online standardisation training, within the 12 months prior to expiry.
