Learning to fly on VATSIM

How to start flying on VATSIM

Taking your first steps on VATSIM can be daunting, especially if you are new to aviation and flight simulation.

At present, the only rating which is required to connect and fly on the network is the P0 (New Member) rating. This is the New Member Orientation Course and examination.

However, if you have never flown online or in real life before, there’s a lot more to learn to be able to participate effectively, enjoy yourself and avoid causing problems for other members on the netowrk. The VATSIM Pilot Ratings are designed to teach you everything you need to know to become a confident and competent virtual pilot in a structured, time-efficient way.

This section is about how you can take your first steps toward acquiring a VATSIM pilot rating.

What will the training include?

Different training providers have different approaches but generally speaking your training will include:

  • Theory training (for instance, through e-learning modules or reading material) and a short multi-choice theory examination
  • Practical lessons with an instructor (either using screen-sharing software for the instructor to observe you flying, or using shared cockpit software)
  • Solo practice on your own
  • A practical flying test

How long does it take to get a VATSIM Pilot Rating?

The total length of time it takes to obtain a rating can vary depending on your availability, prior experience and your progress. However, as a baseline the standard course for the PPL (P1) rating consists of 10 hours of flying, split across 10 training sessions.
